Understanding readings in Italian

A text in Italian

Try to understand how prepositions have been used in the text. Use the table below and check the grammar section if you want to study the prepositions again. It may be a bit hard, but we suggest you try it. Understanding on your own how a language works is always a great satisfaction!

Preposition How is it used? An example from the text
DI
A
DA
IN
  • In front of names of regions
  • In Toscana
CON

As you may have noticed, in the table above we have inserted only the simple prepositions used in the text, that is preposition which are used on their own, without an article. Articulated prepositions bound themeselves with a definite article, joining together in a single block. After studying our page dedicated to simple and articulated prepositions, pay attention to the articulated prepositions in the text about Roberto Benigni which you have read above.

Here they are, underlined in green:

Now try to understand how these articulated prepositions are formed, as in the example:

articulated preposition= simple preposition + definite article
del= Di + il
nel=
al=
nella=
della=
alla=
del=

We would like to ask you to do a last exercise: why did we use articulated prepositions and not simple prepositions in these sentences? We are sure that you will find it easy to answer this question, if you remember what we have explained in our grammar page.
